Drunken drivers allegedly were involved in separate crashes that sent four people, including an Ohio County sheriff's deputy, to the hospital over the weekend.
That accident is under investigation by the Wheeling Police Department. Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said Gregory S. Rogerson, no age listed, of Clearview Avenue was arrested and charged with DUI causing personal injury following the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Warwood Avenue and North 26th Street just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
Kimball said Rogerson was turning left onto Warwood Avenue when he struck Costello's cruiser. Kimball noted Rogerson and an unidentified passenger both appeared to be intoxicated.
Rogerson, another occupant of his vehicle and Costello all were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, Kimball said.
Officers found three open bottles of beer in Rogerson's vehicle and observed a movie playing on a screen in the front seat area. Kimball said both Rogerson and the passenger were "totally uncooperative" and "rude" to investigators and medical staff, and Rogerson refused to submit to any testing at the scene.
Kimball said police plan to subpoena Rogerson's blood test results from the hospital.
Flick was unsure when Costello will be able to return to work but said officials may learn more after follow-up examinations this week.
Kasserman, 23, of Wheeling was allegedly DUI when she crashed her vehicle on Interstate 70 west near exit 1B around 3 a.m. Sunday.
According to court documents, an initial collision occurred between two drivers before Kasserman's Jeep Liberty struck the rear of one of those vehicles.
Kasserman reportedly had a blood-alcohol content of 0.199 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Emergency crews transported one of the drivers involved to Wheeling Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash.
Ohio County Magistrate Harry Radcliffe arraigned Kasserman Sunday on a charge of DUI causing injury.
