Charges are still pending in an accident that apparently led to the death of a Wheeling man.

One of the drivers involved in the Oct. 18 accident, Charles Curran, 81, a native of Wheeling, died Saturday at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

According to Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball, charges were expected to be brought against the driver at fault, who he said is a juvenile.

Ohio County Prosecutor Scott Smith said Wednesday that charges have not been filed, as the crash remains under investigation.

He added that an autopsy report showing Curran's cause of death will not be available for weeks.

Around 5:11 p.m. Oct. 18, two cars collided on the stone bridge near the intersection of National Road and Bethlehem Boulevard.

A Honda Accord and Ford Focus were traveling in opposite directions when the crash occurred in the westbound lane of the bridge.

Both cars sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest in the eastbound lanes, with the Focus' rear wheels on the sidewalk. The bridge was closed in both directions for nearly an hour as emergency personnel cleared debris from the scene.

Curran is survived by three children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Peace Church.
