LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — IOC President Thomas Bach says he has "a lot of respect" for Brazil and its fans after the team's humbling 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semifinals.

Bach, who is German, watched the match at a Lausanne hotel, sitting next to Carlos Nuzman, the Brazilian who heads the organizing committee for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Bach jumped to his feet and raised both arms after Miroslav Klose scored to put Germany up 2-0 after 23 minutes, but was politely restrained after that as the Germans piled on goal after goal.

Bach praised the Brazilian fans, saying "other stadia would have been empty at halftime after 0-5."

He says, "there are these kinds of black days, it's a pity, but Germany was the better team."
