Capito Joins United

By JOSELYN KING Political Writer
POSTED: October 24, 2009

United Bank has announced the addition of a new executive.

Charles L. Capito Jr. has been named executive vice president and director of business development for United Bank. Capito, 55, will leave Smith Barney - the firm he has worked for since 1976.

"I've been there a long time," he said of Smith Barney. "I tell people I'm going to have my first first day at work in 33 and a half years."

Capito spent most of his career in Charleston but took a position with Smith Barney in Washington, D.C., in 2006. He joined his wife, U.S. Rep. Shelly Moore Capito, R-W.Va., in the nation's capitol, and the couple would return home on weekends.

That position wrapped up, and Charles Capito has spent recent months working with a start-up group within Citigroup in New York.

"Because of the situation with Smith Barney and Citigroup, I knew my position wasn't going to continue," he said. "I was quietly looking at opportunities back in West Virginia.

"In situations like that, you move forward," he added. "It was an easy decision to come back to Charleston, W.Va."

In a news release, United Bank officials said Capito "will be actively engaged in business development efforts and working with senior management to help United achieve its strategic goals and objectives. He will build relationships for United not only in West Virginia, but also throughout the bank's footprint including markets in Ohio, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C."

Capito acknowledged that the financial world has changed tremendously since 1976.

"It's different in terms of scope and dollar signs," he acknowledged. "But what hasn't changed is that it remains a relationship business. The relationships with clients and companies, and the bonds between customers and clients - that hasn't changed.

"One of the things I've found most appealing about United is the niche they've maintained well in West Virginia. Having the presence they do in West Virginia, they still remain grounded in West Virginia," Capito said.
