Voting Numbers Look Familiar

By JOSELYN KING Political Writer

POSTED: May 11, 2008

WHEELING — There may be a lot of excitement in West Virginia over Tuesday’s presidential primary election, but the number of those casting ballots early didn’t exceed anyone’s expectations.

Early voting season in the state concluded Saturday, and statewide figures show that early voting turnout was roughly the same as it was for the 2006 general election.

Figures released at the close of voting on Friday by the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office indicated that 57,837 registered voters had cast early ballots in West Virginia — including 40,920 Democrats, 13,205 Republicans, 3,023 with no party affiliation, 19 Mountain Party members, 560 Independents and 110 others belonging to other political groups.

The figures most certainly increased on Saturday, the last day of the early voting in West Virginia. But the Secretary of State’s Office was closed on Saturday, and final statewide figures won’t be available until Monday.

There were 62,762 who voted early in the 2006 general election, according to data provided by the office. Total voter turnout in the election went on to be 473,014 in November, 2006.

But when the figures for the 2008 presidential primary election are compared to those for the last presidential primary election in 2004, early voting figures appear to have doubled.

In the 2004 presidential primary election, 27,226 residents cast early ballots, and this represented 6.3 percent of all votes cast in the election.

In the 2006 primary election, just 25,851 voted early, accounting for 8.73 percent of the total turnout in the state.

Local elections officials on Saturday reported “a steady stream” of voters coming in to vote early, but that they weren’t overwhelmed.

In Brooke County, a total of 655 voted early, including 60 on Saturday.

Hancock County elections officials said 52 voted early on Saturday, bringing their early vote total to 678.

Marshall County Clerk’s Office workers had not yet finished tallying their numbers, but estimated their overall figure at 1,442 having voted early.

In Ohio County, 2,051 early votes were cast, and 183 of these were submitted on Saturday.

Tyler County had 36 early voters come in on Saturday, for a total of 446.

In Wetzel County, there were 953 who voted early, including 79 on Saturday.

West Virginians have had the opportunity to cast early ballots since the 2002 primary election.

GiveGivemeabreak, Thank You! Its about time someone put Ktbass in his/ her place along with all the other Obama haters. I just wish that I got to it before you did.

I am an Obama supporter and the only thing the Obama haters can come up with is that he lived in a Muslim country! Oh well! Thats just like saying that all catholics are child molesters!

I am so sick of the democratic split at this point and honestly, a lot of it stems from negative campaigning which has been mostly Hillary while Obama has professionally delt with the obstacles others try to throw at him.

To the good people of WV, Please make the best decision and not vote for someone because that person is 'suposed' to win a particular state! Also remember, its 2008 and NOT 1998!

ktbass. What difference does it make what religion he was or is. Do you think being of a particular faith will make you a better person or in this case President? This is what Obama was getting at when you spoke about small town american's being angry, and voting for wedge issues like religion, guns and people who are different than they are, instead of voting about issues that affect their pocket books. You sound like one of those people. What you should be concerned about are the war, jobs, and how you'll be able to afford to drive to that job and feed you family. Not a wedge issue like religion. Open you eyes and stop being so hillbilly in you mindset.

Here's a little chart of Hillary's "experience." ://prorev./connex.htm add **** at beginning and com after the . She sure has a lot of connections with Red China. All those donations, guess that's why Bill signed the China Most Favored Nation Treaty and allowed Chinese stuff into the U.S. to compete with our factories, duty free from Tijuana under NAFTA. You saw Bill Clinton shout down one of our own when she suggested that Hillary sold us out on healthcare. Google it on youtube "Clinton argues with voter in W.VA" Since Bush Sr. was V.P. under Reagan, we've had a Bush or a Clinton in the White House for 28 years. Your life gotten better in the last 28 years? Elect Hillary and make it 32. Re-elect her it's 36 years. Next we'll be obligated to elect Chelsea, the Wall St. Hedge fund queen, why that'll be an even 44 year dynasty. You'll be lucky to have a 89 Dodge to live in by then.

Moslem? Nah, I heard he's a Martian and was trained in Moscow to sacrifice babies...All this moslem talk about Obama just makes us look like a bunch of uneducated hillbillies. He's been attending a neighborhood church for 20 plus years folks, remember that? I'm a Red, White and Blue American, Redn*ck, White Man, Blue Collar, and I'm voting for Obama. He scares the cr*p out of Wall Street. They have their own candidate: Hillary, her daughter works at a hedge fund there selling us out, Her husband has an office there, she is a corporate lawyer and had her senatorial district created for her by the money men there: Got carpetbaggers?

gneubeck. It's obvious that you copied your comments about Obama from Sean Hannity's website. They are the same old tired rumors and lies that have been circulated and debunked months ago. If you want to make a serious and intelligent comment,or argument against Obama, make an original one based on facts. Stop being a lazy ass hillbilly and do your own research. And just as a point of reference... Islam is the religion. A Muslim is someone who practice it. Again, if you didn't have your head stuck up a coal mine, you would know things like that. Stop drinking the koolaid Hannity serves everyday. Man up and think for yourself.

HaroldW--Which "fictitious lies" or ill-informed comments would you like to discuss? Yes, please, let's talk about the "issues".

Is it any wonder the National Press has been airing the most ridiculous and ill-informed comments being made by WVirginians about Senator Obama. Seems to be an underground movement to print fictitious lies as though they are actually fact. Something tells me there is allot of fear in a particular party about Senator Obama. When you can't talk about the issues, try character assassination.

Obama, whose father was a practicing Muslim and whose mother was a radical Marxist, has stated that his mother: "Was the dominant figure in my formative years; and, the values she taught me continue to be my touchstone in the world of politics". Common sense deductive reasoning suggests that Obama's rearing as a child, and his extended 20yr relationships with anti-American fanatics such as Rev. Wright and William Ayers are in fact reflective of Obama's true psychological makeup. This man's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin and to place his hand over his heart on the singing of our National Anthem are conditioned reflexes from his protracted association with disaffected elements in our society; visual images that Obama is certain to attempt to obfuscate in future campaign appearances. Further, Michelle Obama's angry commentary directed at our country is telling. Obama is indeed the real-life Manchurian Candidate. Greg Neubeck

GOOD NEWS for HILLARY CLINTON!

From the report above, “when the figures for the 2008 presidential primary election are compared to those for the last presidential primary election in 2004, early voting figures appear to have doubled”. This relates to lawful early voting numbers that have come in before the May 13th Tuesday state wide primary.

Let’s keep this going on Tuesday. We need to rack up some big numbers. I ask West Virginia to let the rest of the country know that W. Va is here, and their votes count.

Please read the following:

Thomas Buffenberger, International President of the Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union addressing a crowd in February said: “Barack Obama is no Muhammad Ali. He took a walk every time there was a tough vote in the Illinois State Senate. He took a walk more than 130 times. That’s what a shadow boxer does. All the right moves. All the right combinations. All the right footwork. But he never steps into the ring”.
