Wheeling Hospital Enhances Children’s Health Care Services

POSTED: November 30, 2007
WHEELING — Wheeling Hospital today announced it has significantly enhanced its health care services for children with the acquisition of a nationally recognized pediatrician’s practice.

The hospital has reached an agreement to acquire the pediatric practice of Dr. Judy Romano. Romano’s Martins Ferry-based practice is one of the largest in the tri-state area. She and her staff will continue seeing patients at their current location.

“We are exceedingly pleased to have Dr. Romano and her team join Wheeling Hospital. They are top-notch pediatricians, and residents of our region are fortunate to have them,” said Ronald L. Violi, Wheeling Hospital chief executive officer. “One of our goals is to grow our Pediatrics Department to ensure that high-quality health care for children is close to home. Bringing Dr. Romano and her colleagues on board is a key step in that direction.”

Romano’s practice includes Dr. Mary Hammond, Dr. Sheela Rao, pediatric nurse practitioner Larry Darrah and other support staff.

“My staff and I are extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with Wheeling Hospital,” Romano said. “When it comes to children’s health, the hospital has set an aggressive, yet fundamental, agenda — to provide children with additional and enhanced health care services close to home.”

Romano is known nationwide for her skills and contributions to her profession. In 2003, she was named Pediatrician of the Year by the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. A Fellow in the AAP, Romano has served on its National Committee on Early Childhood, Adoption and Dependent Care and is currently on the Provisional Section on Early Education and Child Care Executive Committee. She is a nationally recognized speaker on early education, child care, school readiness and early childhood advocacy.

Under former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise, she served on the Governor’s Cabinet on Women and Children. She is a member of the West Virginia and Ohio chapters of the AAP and chairman of the Ohio AAP Early Education and Child Care Committee. In addition, Romano serves on the board of the Ohio AAP and is on the Health Advisory Committee for the Northern Panhandle and Belmont County Head Start.

Romano graduated from the Alderson-Broaddus College with a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing and received her master’s degree in nursing from West Virginia University. She earned her medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine, where she also served as chief resident during her pediatrics residency.

Hammond, a Wheeling native, received her undergraduate degree at Wheeling Jesuit University and her medical degree at WVU School of Medicine. Rao graduated from Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada, AP, India, and completed her residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Darrah is a graduate of the School of Health Care Sciences in Texas and has been certified nationally as a pediatric nurse practitioner since 1979.

“The acquisition of Dr. Romano’s practice helps Wheeling Hospital fulfill two other goals. First, it is part of our efforts to attract additional subspecialty physicians to the hospital. Secondly, it fits into Bishop (Michael J.) Bransfield’s quest to improve the health of West Virginia residents,” noted Violi.

Last year, Bransfield, bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, launched a statewide campaign aimed at improving the health of residents of all faiths and ages. The initiative includes providing grants, training and education to help improve residents’ health. Wheeling Hospital is owned by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
