Soldier Responds

POSTED: October 16, 2007
Editor, News-Register:

As an infantry non-commissioned officer and Bellaire native, currently serving in Iraq (my third tour). I find it absolutely ridiculous that so many people feel the need to share their negative opinions on the war in Iraq with the public. Aside from the fact that your “expert analysisî” is based off of what you read in the “idiot’s guide to understanding Islamic fundamentalists,” you have never set one foot in this country. Yet your opinionsî apparently carry more weight than ours. You (with help from the media) have created a situation where a political figure who doesn’t oppose the war is committing political suicide.

Take Rep. Charlie Wilson’s visit to Iraq. He was in country what, a week? Yet he managed to downplay the single greatest achievement in this war, (and possibly the turning point of this war) the Anbar Awakening. Imagine what the soldier who risked his life and bled to achieve this monumental victory thinks about Wilson’s assessment. Years and years of fighting, summed up in a week’s time?

You do not see the underlying effects that your personal opinionsî have on the American soldier. You are not supporting anyone; you are hurting soldiers by forcing politicians to accept yourî views of the war. Gen. Petraeus, in my opinion, is the right man for the job. He has done everything in his power to repair the relationship we have with the Iraqi people. In fact, his policy on winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people has made it harder to defend ourselves, yet we are safer because we are not creatingî terrorists through our own actions (ie. collateral damage). Yet, he was crucified by Congress in Washington when he presented his assessment. Why? Because someone who is elected into office by the public, does not go against the voice of the people who elected him. And that voice is your voice, not ours. And it says “end the warî.”

In closing, I would like to remind the author of a letter against the war that this is a war on terror, not Iraq. We are fighting terrorists from all over the world, not just Iraqi terrorists. We view the withdraw of troops in Iraq as an end to the war completely.

We fail to remember that the terrorists are more than willing to become martyrs. Do you remember 9/11? Now, do you honestly believe that because we pull out of Iraq that they will just simply give up?

How much hatred does it take to make a man strap a bomb to his chest? Will pulling out of Iraq stop an anger that intense? President Bush has made Iraq the battleground, rather than America. Would you prefer a roadside bomb hitting armored tanks in Iraq or a school bus in Ohio?
