atoddh, WV is last in the good economic categories and first in the bad ones! How much worse could it be? You do realize when Byrd and old-man Mollohan first went to DC that WV was in the middle of the pack for economic "stuff?" So they tanked WV and you want more of it! Sad stuff.

hoopie "The ACA is working as intended"

Yes it is, hoopie. It's turning America into a welfare society. Just like Comrade Barry Obankrupter wants us to be. Poor, stupid, and dependent. Demorat utopia.

dying: Byrd and Mollohan on Appropriations directed tens of millions into WV. The situation would have been much worse without them. WV has no Congressional power now. With the loss of coal-the State's main "cash crop"-the future is very bleak indeed.

No effort has been -or is being-made to diversify.

I should add the millions poured into Wheeling via the Park Service was squandered by the Park Commission members- and friends- with negative results. Downtown is worse off than pre-WNHAC.

The Affordable Care Act was designed to cover those w/o health insurance. It has been a huge success in WV b/c so many did not have coverage. If Medicaid expansion would be enacted in all states, millions more would get the health coverage that they need. The ACA is working as intended. Get Americans covered with health insurance.

Coal was the number one employer in WV.

Now it is Wal*Mart! At about 1/3 the wages.

See how this green stuff works???

atoddh, So how did WV fair with Byrd and Mollohan (old man and son) in DC for 50+ years? Mollohan enriched himself and Bryd had sent a lot of ONE-TIME money! Follow the story in Mississippi and note how Cochran is keeping the good peeps of Mississippi right in the company of WV! He's a R, results are the same....

ray: I can tell you first hand- having come forward on several occasions- the Wheeling powers do not want change or diversification. The same may be said of WV in general. Now the State is in a huge jam going forward

There was-as an example- a huge opportunity to restart JUSA( Downtown tourism) and the once-prolific Schmulbach Brewery(for a WV manufactured export.)These were treated with hostility by the Wheeling non-profit establishment.

When the State is hit with the Medicaid tab what will happen???

folks: Recall McKinley- and the NR- claimed "steel and coal" were the future of the OV and WV; not the past. Still trying to hang on to this notion.

Well said atoddh! And old dyingov can't make his or her mind if its the Democrats fault that coal in decline, or that we depend so much on the Coal barons like Don Blankenship and Robert Murray.

Now that's Funny Stuff! :)

folks: WV has a huge financial problem now with coal in decline. Medicaid is based in income. WV is the lowest income in the USA. The situation is getting worse ;not better. Byrd and Mollohan on Appropriations did bring Federal projects in. They are gone.

" Charleston Gazette: West Virginia was left behind in economics

West Virginia and Maine are the only states losing population, the Census Bureau announced on Monday. This means West Virginia continues to be left behind economically as young entrepreneurs seek opportunities elsewhere, and the state attracts few workers.

Since 1950, the U.S. population doubled, while West Virginia's population fell by 7 percent. The problem is the people who leave create jobs and taxes, leaving behind the poor, the disabled and the elderly who need services that charities and government provide."

Rayduck, and you want to blame it on the 2 R congress-peeps! Sad stuff!

"Democratic New York Congressman Charlie Rangel made a rather racially-charged remark about the main rival in his re-election bid during a debate Friday. Rangel suggested his opponent in the Democratic primary, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, has accomplished little besides being from the Dominican Republic in a district with a large Latino population."
