The Burger plant is gone. Shadyside school district has become accustomed to living on easy street. Haswell needs to figure out how the school district can live within the budget they have, just like the rest of us do.

I did write in haste, Burger was part of the mentioned decree (previous was not) to lessen the burden that would have been levied on Sammis. The bio fuel project plus alge farming research and deep well storage gave Burger new life.

No, the Burger Plant was not one of the plants involved in that decree. Burger was selected to convert partially to "green" fuel and was in the process in doing that, not to mention they (Burger) had spent several millions in the past several years to comply further with carbon emissions. With or without the Bio fuel, Burger was a very clean plant and actually unit #3 is still permitted to come on line, although it never will.

The Burger plant was closed as a result of a 2005 consent decree to settle a 1999 lawsuit filed by eight states (including Massachsetts under Gov. Romney). The consent decree was negotiated by the Justice Dept. and EPA under President Bush.
