Michael, sorry for your loss. Best of luck in turning a tragedy into something positive. I don't need to tell you that it is an uphill battle, but someone has to step up. The police and city leaders can not solve all the problems of the city, and when they try, they often use the wrong tool because they can't be leaders and parents. Others within the community need to step up as well

I'm also so sorry for your loss Michael. I was driving through Steubenville the other day and was taking a performer to Pittsburgh airport. He was asking about the abandoned buildings. If this was what they called the rust belt. I answered yes and in this little city here there has been a lot of murders lately. As a matter of fact a young man got stabbed to death a couple of weeks ago. He said..your kidding....wow..God Bless you and your family Michael. I truly hope you find the strength to work thru this hard time in your life and your family as well. Something has to change. we need to take our communities back from the drug dealers and so called gangsters. Good luck sir.

I am very sorry for this man. No parent should ever lose a child in this manner. I am encouraged by his positive tone and by the fact that discipline and parenting are the key points of focus. Usually, it is some community organizer blaming whitey or poverty for the violence. The hard truth is that 99% of the violence in this country is a DIRECT result of poor parenting. But in this PC America, no one is responsible for their actions (or inactions) so we have to shift the blame.

I also applaud the call to end black on black violence but what about black on white violence?

FBI Uniform Crime Reports are your friend. White people SHOULD be wary when approached by a group of young blacks. Just the facts, ma'mn.

ragnar, "The hard truth is that 99% of the violence in this country is a DIRECT result of poor parenting." Really?

Was parenting better in the 50's-60's?

That should be easy to fix!

Was parenting better in the 50's, 60's and even 70's...........ABSOLUTLY!!!!! Until Police are permitted to use deadly force, more often, then nothing will change no matter how much anyone talks about reducing crime.

Seriously ShempH, do you want these local yokel cops, who watched too many crime shows as kids, using more deadly force? For the most part Marshall County PD's shouldn't even permitted to have bullets.

This just breaks my heart

These kids need to be raised and taught from the time they are little to respect authority figures, respect others, and respect themselves

And that taking a life is a SIN and will haunt them the rest of their lives

"We must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers." - Martin Luther King Jr. "Eulogy for the Martyred Children" (1963)

dyingov: 'Was parenting better in the 50's-60's?

Yeah....it was better. No it's not easy to fix. It cannot be fixed. In the '50's women were wives and mothers. They ran the house, cooked, cleaned, watched, protected and advised their broods. But they burned their bras, bought into 'women's lib' and went out to low paying jobs.

Result? Nobody to watch their kids who smoke, drink, steal, fight, take drugs, diddle little Suzie next door, etc.

I don't know why today's folks have kids....oh, that's right, they 'want it all'. Well, so as ye sew...so shall ye reap'
