Statehood Spirit Alive and Well

Band, cannons, speeches mark W.Va.’s 150th

June 21, 2013

WHEELING — With cannon blasts, a volley of musket fire and three cheers of “Hip, hip, huzzah!” from the crowd, the spirit of 1863 was in full force Thursday as West Virginia’s birthplace marked the......

I am not blind to anything. I may not support the government but I do support the people. I am not without hope. I live here and believe in this city. Regardless of the negativity generated by others. I will support the many local businesses that are thriving and succeeding here. I'm sorry you felt you had to leave. I wish you the best wherever you are, but please don't lump me in with a group of people like that. I am an optimistic person and feel that this city deserves a chance. I just think it's a waste for people who have left this area and troll the message boards here, and there are many, to spread their negativity and bash on the good people who live here for having a positive outlook on things. I'm not giving up even though they and you have. I love this town and will fight for it!

hercx007: the ignorance and the corruption of the government, plus the dismal appearance of the city of my youth, convinced me that it was time to move on. Also, I moved because I could; which saddens me because there are so many stuck there with no hope. So many, and I would count you among them, are just blind to the aforementioned ignorance of your government, and someone has to say something, so I do.

Hefner, it could have taken place at a bar at Black's Cabin but it didn't and that's the point. It happened here. This is where it took place and thus the reason for the celebration. I just don't get it. You moved from this area. You got the heck out of Dodge and yet you still feel compelled to troll the newspaper site and spread your negativity. If you were so gung ho on showing everyone here how it's supposed to be done, why run off? Why not stay and do something about all the wrong that has perpetuated on the good citizens of Wheeling? You are one of those people who, if at a parade where $50 bills were being handed out, would question why you weren't being handed $100 instead.

And the Governor? Why wasn't the day a state holiday so that the Congress could attend? We give them days off that are much less significant!

The mayor as usual got it wrong. Without slavery and the secession of the southern states from the Union, and that portion of Virginia, now known as West Virginia, seceding from Virginia, there would be no West Virginia. Wheeling was just where this all took place and some credit is due, but it could just as well have happened at a bar out at Black's Cabin.
