Joey, please tell us what OTHER RIGHTS granted by the Constitution requires a background check to exercise?

Free Speech (1st)?

Freedom of Religion (1st)?

Equal Protection (14th)?

Right not to incriminate (5th)?

Just asking . . . . . .

Maybe we need a background check to post on the NR blog?

91% of all Americans want background checks to help keep guns out of the hands of convicts, rapists, and the mentally ill but Congress just can't make this happen. If Congress cannot do what 91% of Americans want done, then it is time to remove them from Congress...

If it were true that 91% of Americans wanted more background checks, our political-animal congresspersons would be falling over one another in the rush to sponsor this bill. The number 91% is manufactured by invalid, anti-gun, agenda-driven polling data, and our politically-saavy politicians know that well. But it sounds good when you spew it, hoopie. LOL

I don't get all the angst about background checks. I've had concealed permits in four states and have had a background check in them all. In NY you give your guns to the sheriff to be registered. I don't see how a background check would be accomplished in a private sale situation, and for shotguns and sporting rifles, that is guns that can't be reconfigured to automatic fire, I don't see the need of the background check.

I almost equate the background check system to the tax code when it comes to Dems. If it doesn't work the first time, add a few more chapters and a thousand more pages of regulation and see if it works this time.

There is not 91% agreement on anything in this country so I think the number is pure baloney, however it is true that many gun owners are not afraid of background checks being extended if it will help to keep guns from being used by criminals. YOu would have to be pretty dim to not look around at a gun show and see that this is the perfect way for a criminal, a prohibited person who cannot buy from a gun shop, to get a gun to be used in a crime. Or an illegal immigrant or even a terrorist or someone buying for illegals or criminals. I am a gun owner but I see felons with guns as a problem to my rights too. We have background checks to buy from an FFL dealer, or to have a concealed permit. How can we not see the gunshows as a problem? I am not interested in protecting the bogus rights of a felon to own a gun. 80,000 prohibited people tried to buy at an FFL gun dealer last yr and were denied. None at a gun show. Its a problem that won't go away by stamping our feet.

Never mind that NONE of the tragic shootings would have been prevented by a background check. They always play with our emotions by reminding us of the Newtown school massacre but those guns were his mother's. She got them legally, he stole them from her.

Nine in 10 Americans support expanding background checks on gun purchases in a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, an extraordinary level of agreement on a political issue and a finding that’s been duplicated in nearly every major public poll. Surveys show broad support spans gun owners and non-gun owners alike, Democrats and Republicans, and even among members of the National Rifle Association, whose leadership is leading efforts to spike the measure from pending legislation Washington Post

guess that would make it 90%!

Wrat, Troll, when polls or elections don't support your position, they're invalid. The American people want this and more. Its only the NRA, and gun worshippers like you who oppose it.

Here is the problem that the pro background check has, and that is that they don't understand what is being proposed. If you give your son a gun for Xmas, you would have to do a background check, and the list of idiotic requirements goes on and on. It is a stupid suggestion for stupid people. This proposal would unjustifiably expand an already out of control bureaucracy, which is what the progressive (socialist / communist) democrats want. There is no common sense amongst fools.

Nothing this government does makes any sense. It is always bass-ackwards.

Politicians are so dammnnnn any of them have any common sense? How about upholding the U.S. Constitution as it is written?

Ownership of an arm is a right that is not to be infringed.

The left likes to point out all the killings by use of a gun. How about all the killings from abortions? AIDS? Knives? Axes? Motor Vehicles? Poisonings? Abuse of alcohol & drugs?

Time to strip off the mask & identify what this 'gun grab' effort is really all about. It ain't about public safety, it is about much, much more. An attempt to undo the foundations & underpinning of America. Another chip away at law abiding citizens liberty and freedom.

Keep wearing down the people..keep chipping away at liberty...keep suppressing the truth in unrighteousness.

Manchin doesn't realize it but he is just a tool for the left.

How 'bout some background checks on politicians?

The reasons corporate profits are up are because corporations are forced to outsource a lot of jobs that used to be done in the USA. But because of crippling obama government regulations and unions demanding more and more from corporations, they have no choice but to go overseas where the business climates are more favorable.

Automation also plays a big role in the corporate profit increases. Robots cannot be forced to join a union.

BillSpencer, is exactly right. Either way you look at it, Adam Lanza either stole the firearms from his mother (a crime), or she purchased them with the intention of giving them to him (straw purchase, also a crime). Neither situation would have been prevented with even the most stringent background check. How could any reasonably competent person think that this will lessen gun violence in any way?
