It's really time to move to another state when a health officer thinks he/she has the right to ignore a proven allergy. There's a case in Washington where a young man died in jail because he was given oatmeal with milk and told he "must" eat it. Powers that be can take a life. ***********katu****/news/local/Wash-inmate-with-dairy-allergy-dies-after-eating-oatmeal-174446621.html?print=y

Living with life threatening allergies is a hardship and worry that no one can comprehend, unless you live with it. These people are needlessly putting an innocent child through stress and fear that is totally unnecessary. Shame on you.

Dear Dr. Mercer, A "surprise" is what a child finds in his Easter basket, a child having a severe reaction to a known allergen forced into his body is not a "surprise" Who would be responsible for your "oopsie" if the child was forced to get the vaccine? You should be forever grateful to this mother, and apologetic to the boy. But that's just me.

another test.

I do not understand why a Health Officer who does NOT treat a child is allowed to overrule the decision of a child's licensed physician. What would have happened if the mom went ahead with the vaccine when it was initially denied?

I'm sorry, Dr. Mercer, but you can't have it both ways. You follow what the CDC says regarding who should be vaccinated yet you second guess what the CDC says when it comes to who SHOULDN'T be vaccinated? I'm curious also - the 48 states that offer MORE than just the medical exemption that WV offers (and offers medical exemptions that are easier to obtain) actually have GREATER vaccination rates in most cases than WV does. By giving parents the ability to work with their doctors to do what is best for their children, vaccination rates rise. It seems you haven't read the New England Journal of Medicine recently to learn that this is the EXACT recommendation for increasing vaccination rates. If you don't trust doctors in this state to adequately care for families, then there is a larger issue at hand.

HOW HORRIFIC is it that this poor child has to be subjected to poison AGAIN and AGAIN in order to prove that he has a severe allergy, and be medically exempted from this vaccine? I mean really people?? IS this ok with you? Parents??? This is HORRIFIC!!! Where are the parental rights here!!
