Three Dog NightsJanuary 26, 2013How soon we forget. We’ve been spoiled in recent years when it comes to really cold and snowy winters. This week’s deep freeze combined with snow alerts have sent the Ohio Valley into a tizzy.... Showing 3 of 3 comments

The term, "three dog night", refers to the practice of having sled dogs sleep next to you to help fight off the intense chill. A "3 dog night" was usually at least 30-to-50 below zero. The coldest I ever experienced was minus 70 degrees. Camped in an unheated tent was miserable even with the best of sleeping bags, caribou skin mats and fully dressed in down insulated clothes and double caribou skin parka. I learned that real cold will scare you.
