Solid Showings

Wheeling Central’s Victor Greco eyes a return shot during Saturday’s action at the West Virginia High School Tennis Championships in Charlesto
May 11, 2008

CHARLESTON — Even before Saturday’s finals at the West Virginia State Tennis Tournament started, Charleston Catholic had already wrapped up the team title in Class AA/A.

The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights were just looking to come away with two individual titles.

Apparently, the Irish wanted those too.

Victor Greco and Jordan Sorge were defeated in the finals, ending their hopes for singles championships and Wheeling Central finished the weekend at the Kanawha City Community Center with a third-place finish.

‘‘There have been a lot of years when we left with no points, so this group made a very good showing,’’ Wheeling Central coach Peggy Dailer said. ‘‘I’m real proud of them.’’

Wheeling Central entered the day a point behind Bluefield for second place, needing victories from both Greco and Sorge to claim the runners-up spot.

Greco, the No. 2 singles player, drew a tough task in Charleston Catholic’s Tyler Whipkey.

Whipkey dominated from the start, placing perfect shots and forcing Greco into errors.

As the frustration built on Greco, Whipkey took advantage to take both sets, 6-0, 6-0.

‘‘I kind of expected it,’’ Greco said. ‘‘He was an incredible player. He used his angles and had an incredible top spin. I just plain got beat.

‘‘I always play my best and I think I did (Saturday). I’m kinda bummed out though.
