If there’s one thing West Virginia coach Bill Stewart has repeated — and there’s way more than one thing — it’s that Pat White is the greatest winner in college football today. While there might be some fifth-year seniors at Ohio State, Boise State, Texas, Oklahoma, and USC that have something to say about that, what Stewart’s talking about has nothing to do with scoreboards or statistics or records. He’s talking about heart. Determination. Perseverance. A competitive fire. Pat White is a living, breathing Hall of Famer in all four. He’s talking about White, writhing in pain, getting helped up off the grass at the Gator Bowl in 2007 and running for 15 yards on the next play, eventually leading the Mountaineers back from a 35-17 deficit without running mate Steve Slaton. He’s talking about White, coming off the bench down 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter as a redshirt freshman in 2005, bringing the Mountaineers back for an overtime victory against Louisville. He’s talking about White, injured on the sideline against Rutgers in 2006, first rooting backup Jarrett Brown to a victory, then saying he’s got to get healthy so he doesn’t lose his job. He’s talking about White, famously caught having fun growling on the sideline by ESPN cameras because there was little left to do after he’d run for 220 yards and passed for 204 yards in a blowout road victory against Pitt. Only eight college quarterbacks have reached numbers like that in a single game.
