Not a Prayer

November 24, 2009 - Joselyn King
O.K. I need a little help understanding this one.

The Roman Catholic bishop of Providence-- apparently as far back as two years ago -- instructed U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., to refrain from receiving Holy Communion because of his stance on abortion. The matter brought to light by Kennedy just this week as he criticized Roman Catholic bishops for threatening to oppose an overhaul of the health care system unless restrictions were tightened on publicly-financed abortion.

Kennedy -- a strong supporter of the health care reform bill that bears the name of his father, the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. -- is pro-choice.

He has also struggled with his own demons over the years. Kennedy most recently a widely-publicized car crash near the U.S. Capitol that he attributed to prescription drug addiction, and has been in and out of rehab for drug and alcohol addiction. He has also spoken out on behalf and others with bi-polar disorder, seeking that mental illness be addressed as part of health care insurance.

Seems that the man -- probably like many other members of Congress -- is in need of some spiritual enlightenment.
