While I loved summer vacation when I was a kid, I hear more and more youngsters say they are bored by this time of the summer. Bored? I was never bored when summer came around. We played a lot. We went to day camp when we could. We stood in the sprinkler and sat in rain puddles. We read books and more books. The chalkboard was not blank in our house anytime of the year. We camped in the backyard and caught fireflies until we ran out of jars. We watched the moon come out and searched for the Big and Little Dippers while laying flat on our backs in the yard. We played marbles and checkers and Chinese checkers, learning to count along the way. We even made ice cream in an old-fashioned handcranked contraption. Talk about exercise. We ran, rode bikes, swam, danced and loved life. If we were in the house for too long, Mom scooted us out the door. Maybe we didn't need three whole months to be kids but childhood goes fast enough. Enjoy the days, kids.
