A Mother's anguish
April 1, 2009 - Heather Ziegler
When John McKinney-Roberts was found dead in his jail cell around 6 a.m. Tuesday in the Belmont County jail, no one bothered to send someone to his mother's house to tell her in person. In fact, she had to find out at the courthouse three hours later. What were they thinking at that jail? There have been enough allegations of wrong-doing at that jail of late that you would think everyone there would be walking on eggshells to do the right thing. Why didn't they call McKinney-Roberts' attorney and send him and a deputy to her house? This is ridiculous. The mother is not a criminal but the Belmont County Sheriff's Department treated her like one yesterday. As a mother, I can't imagine learning of something this horrible. Yes, McKinney-Roberts was accused of a terrible murder, but his mother should not have been victimized as well. Shame on the whole department.
