Is there nothing better for West Virginia lawmakers to worry about than the Barbie doll? I could not believe my eyes when I read about Del. Jeff Eldrige's proposal to remove Barbie dolls from our store shelves. He said the doll makes girls place too much importance on physical beauty at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development. I think the real problem here is that Eldridge probably wanted to play with Barbie dolls when he was a kid and he wasn't allowed to do so! If he wants to get rid of the real negative influences on our children, then perhaps he should ban Jackass and the whole MTV channel because some of the stuff on there sure does nothing to boost our kids' intellect. How about banning the comic strips or comic books because they sure do emphasize women's anatomy in a way that is not attainable to most of the female population. I love Barbie and so do most of my generation. Sure I would love to have Barbie's waistline but I feel no less of a woman because I don't. Anyway, grow up, legislator, sir, and tackle something more important like nutritious hot lunches or demand that physical education and playground time be as important as math, reading and science in our schools. I could go on, but I doubt if it would make any difference. Lawmakers continue to appease special interests rather than listen to their constituents. All we can do is vote.
