A Quick Getaway

February 3, 2009 - Phyllis Sigal
Oglebay is such a treasure that we have right at our fingertips.

And speaking of fingertips, I decided to pamper myself this past weekend with a quick trip to the West Spa at Wilson Lodge. It was on Saturday in the midst of preparations for the Wheeling Symphony Viennese Winter Ball.

I had spent most of the day at the lodge getting things ready for the dessert room for the ball, but decided to get my nails polished before the big evening.

I had made an appointment earlier in the week with Katrina for a color change. I was just sorry I didn't have the time for the whole treatment — for a manicure and pedicure and massage and ... . But my 45 minutes or so in the spa was still quite relaxing, and a welcome respite. Just walking through the door into the West Spa is wonderful, with its pleasant aroma that greets and calms the senses. Subdued lighting and pleasant music add to the relaxing atmosphere.

I got there a few minutes early and had time to chat with Jessica, the receptionist. She said it was quite a relaxing place to work. Imagine working in that environment! How lucky she is! I asked her about the clientele at the spa. Was it mostly hotel guests that came for services? Or were there area people as well? They do get both, she noted.

She pointed out that some people have questioned whether the spa is actually open to the public; of course it is, which is a good thing!

Katrina did a great job on my nails. And I expected she would; her customer before me had driven all the way from Woodsfield, Ohio, just to get her nails done by Katrina, which she does every couple of weeks!

My color change was an inexpensive way to get a great new look for the ball, but if you're in the market for more of a spa experience, there is a whole menu of offerings: massages, body scrubs and wraps, healing therapies, manicures, pedicures and waxing. Facials will be available this spring. What a great addition the spa is to the lodge.

The best part of my spa experience was relaxing in the pedicure chair after Katrina finished polishing my fingernails and toenails, and watching the sun set out the window over the beautiful snow-covered hillside of Oglebay. It was the exact view, just a few floors down from our room in the new addition of Wilson Lodge.

Our room had a push-button gas fireplace, which was great. I felt as if I had pushed another button for the gorgeous sunset view, as well!

I love the new part of the lodge. The rooms have beautiful fabrics and furnishings, and the bathroom was HUGE with a bathtub and a shower stall. A towel warmer was a nice amenity, as were the large-sized bottles of shampoo etc. that are supplied. It was a perfect overnight getaway, right in our own backyard.

So, if you're in the need for a quick getaway and don't want to travel too far, check out Oglebay Park's Wilson Lodge and all it has to offer.
