"Who Loves You?" I Do!
January 12, 2009 - Phyllis Sigal
Frankie, Tommy, Nick and Bob ... they all walked off the stage and into my heart Friday night at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh.
Frankie, Tommy, Nick and Bob are the "Jersey Boys" — also known as the Four Seasons.
We've heard their songs for years, of course — "Earth Angel," "(Who Wears) Short Shorts," "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man," "My Boyfriend's Back," "Stay," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," "Working My Way Back to You," "Rag Doll," "Who Loves You?" and "My Eyes Adored You" ...
But, the musical tells us the story behind the four young men and the songs they sang. We also see the actual intertwining of the songs with what happens in their lives. So we see a bit of a cross between a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons concert and a Broadway musical. And it makes for quite an entertaining as well as informative evening.
As a member of the audience, you can tell who is there for the music. There were some definite Valli fans out there ... cheering for their favorite songs. By the end of the show, however, we were all up on our feet moving to the music.
Erik Bates, who plays Tommy DeVito, actually toured singing backup as one of the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli. Steve Gouveia, who plays Nick Massi, is from the original Broadway cast of "Jersey Boys," and Joseph Leo Bwarie, Frankie, also played Frankie twice a week in the Las Vegas production of "Jersey Boys."
The three women in the cast have their work cut out for them. They play a total of 52 roles between them!
It's a great show. At first, I thought it was a bit too much of a documentary, but the entertainment factor kicked in soon enough. And I walked out humming the tunes and loving it!
About the Production:
"Jersey Boys" is the winner of four 2006 Tony Awards Including Best Musical. Other Tony Awards include Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. Drama Desk Awards for 2006 include Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Sound Design. Outer Critics Circle Awards for 2006 include Outstanding Broadway Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Lighting Design. "Jersey Boys" also received the 2006 Drama League Award for Distinguished Production of a Musical.
"Jersey Boys" is the story of how four boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi – The Four Seasons – wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were 30. "Jersey Boys" features their hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Oh What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” among others.
And, just how did those four young blue-collar boys become Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons — one of the greatest music success stories in history?
Check out "Jersey Boys" at the Benedum Center, now through Feb. 1.
