When I was a little girl, every Christmas Eve my family would drive around and look at Christmas lights. We had our favorite neighborhoods to check out — some really did it up.
My favorite was Elm Crest Drive and the streets in the neighborhood just above the Elm Terrace Shopping Plaza. All of the houses put out luminaria on Christmas Eve. It was magical — even to a little Jewish girl.
I still love to drive around and check out the lights on houses.
This year, my husband and I made a special trip to Wolfhurst to see the lights put up by Paul "the security guard" Porter. He tells me about his lights whenever I see him at Centretown Fitness Center, and last year, one of our reporters did a story on his efforts.
By the time we got there last year, the lights were down. So this year, I was determined to see them.
He's been putting his lights up for many years, and starts soon after Halloween (he puts up Halloween lights, too).
His lights are nostalgic. There's some animation ... dancing reindeer, a helicopter, a santa tipping its hat (although, my husband insists that one is in the neighbor's yard). There's lots of white lights and colored lights on the house ... There is a train and many other figures to see.
HIs yard is filled with brilliant lights!
It's simply beautiful — "simply" being the operative word. It's not high-tech. It's an old-fashioned treat for the eyes.
And it's worth the trip. If you turn right from U.S. 40 just before St. Joseph Central School in Wolfhurst, then turn right again, you can't miss it!
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
