It's a sad opening day of hunting season with two men in our area losing their lives on a day that should have been just a day off work to hunt. Hunting can be dangerous but one man died of carbon monoxide poisoning and the other is believed to be of natural causes. While hunting with guns is dangerous most hunters in this area take the activity seriously and abide by the rules. Deer hunting in West Virginia is steeped in tradition that goes deeper than just bagging that trophy buck. So many more people are depending on venison to eat this winter. Some schools will experience a shortage of students this week and it's more about feeding the family in some areas than skipping school. Meat processing businesses are reporting a slight increase in the number of deer being processed for food. It's not for everyone, but don't knock it until you've tried it.
