Today I have thanked two people that I know who are veterans of the U.S. military. If I run into any others before the day is over, I will thank them as well. Sometimes I don't think we understand what Veterans Day is compared to Memorial Day. Veterans Day is to honor all living veterans while also remembering those who have died. Memorial Day is for remembering the dead, especially service personnel. I was glad to hear that about 100 people attended Wheeling's Veterans Day service at WesBanco Arena. In some years past, the numbers were very low. I think as more young soldiers come home from Iraq, more people will attend these services as well. My dad was a World War II veteran, Army drill sergeant who was at the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded and picked shrapnel out of his head until the day he died in 1991. Even if you don't support the war, let our veterans know we appreciate what they do.
