Lights Are On Even in December
August 13, 2008 - Heather Ziegler
It's nice that the city of Wheeling is taking care of the skateboarders in Elm Grove by adding lights for night time play at the skatepark. The facility is top notch and is attracting kids and adults from as far away as Pittsburgh. While it was a longtime in coming, it has been a great success with those who use it. Sadly, many of the city's playgrounds are under-utilized for a number of reasons. Some are simply population decline in areas previously dominated by young families. But I do wonder why the lights are on at the playgrounds at 10 p.m. or after in the middle of December and January. Maybe it is to encourage snow angel making on the basketball courts. However, all playgrounds are supposed to close by 10 p.m. I know you can save money at home turning off the lights when not in use and installing those energy efficient lightbulbs. Perhaps the city could have the electric company adjust the timers on those lights during the wintertime and save the taxpayers' dollars.
