Big Bang Theory
July 5, 2008 - Phyllis Sigal
It's always too bad when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate for big events, such as the Independence Day festivities in downtown Wheeling.
The vendors, the outdoor concert and the fireworks are such a part of so many people's July 4th, but the rain got the best of the day, with the parade canceled, the outdoor concert moved inside and the fireworks postponed until July 5.
But the great thing is that close to 1,000 people came to downtown Wheeling to listen to the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andre Raphel Smith, with guest artist The Mountain Stage Band. That says a lot for our orchestra.
My theory used to be that people mainly came downtown on July 4th for the fireworks, but the respectable attendance at WesBanco Arena certainly disproves that.
People around the state have had a chance to hear this year's concert. The symphony was in Clarksburg on July 3, Wheeling on the fourth, Canaan State Park on July 5 and at the Weirton Mittal Office grounds on July 6.
