Myer on Politics

POSTED:Mon, March 17, 2008 @ 1:25PM

Where's the money coming from?

West Virginia legislators approved a budget that, taking into account all operations of state government, tops $10 billion for the coming year. The total spending they approved is nearly $100 million in excess of what Gov. Joe Manchin proposed.
Of course, every dime is "worthwhile." No sarcasm intended.
But where's the money going to come from? Lawmakers appear to have taken an optimistic view regarding revenue. Let's hope they're right - and that the state doesn't start digging another deep hole of debt.

They "Rebell and Stand up for themselves because no one else will stand up that we have elected in office. Review the Preamble of the US Constitution. Who exactly is the "Government"? As for Welfare, I wrote a Editoral and sent it in Labled "LOcal System". I can almost bet the EDITOR will not publish it. Dont u think we are all sick of paying out $350.00 per week in Taxes to support Welfare. The state of Ohio says u can have 3 babies under the system and as long as they are under 26 they will tie the womans Tubes. Why should these kids care. . I cannot afford Insurance for my wife and I, but I have to supply medical and all for Lazy BUMS! One of the biggest problems is that too many people have come to depend upon the government for everything. Legislators need to focus on essential services for the state and cut the welfare rolls. Our college education people are leaving the state and the welfar recipients are staying. We need to reverse both of those trends.

From parking meters, Mike, the same ones turning shoppers "off" from outdated cities like Wheeling...all over West Virginia.

Editor:You really should consider advocating Mr. Lees suggestions. The only way out of this is to grow the economy.Tax cuts are not enough and are actually going to make the problem worse. An infusion of equity for new and expanding business would work.

Investing money into the Universities and scholarships to attend them is just facilitating the departure of the graduates.

As the heavy industries decline (eg 93% of the Wierton Steel payroll) there is nothing to replace them - as it stands.

You are right:"Where will the money come from."

West Virginia is #1 in alot of things: #1 in ATV deaths #1 in high unemployment #1 in residents on wellfare #1 in heart disease #1 in cancer #1 in chew tobacco use So why are we surprised when we are #1 in the most taxed citizens in the nation?

The Editor is right. The legislators seem to be in "denial" - even delusional - about the WV economy. They certainly can not depend on the heavy industry of the Northern Panhandle as is in past years.
