Who Is This Woman?

December 3, 2007 - Phyllis Sigal
If you happened to read "Phyllis' Fantasy Football" blogs parts 1 & 2, you'll know that I've been consumed for the past few days with the Pitt/WVU football game.

And that really is an anomaly for me. But I must say I — a 1980 Pitt graduate — went to extremes this past weekend. (Hail to Pitt!)

When I turned on the television at 8 p.m. Sunday night to watch the BCS show announcing the bowl games, I thought maybe an alien had taken over my previously non-sports persona.

But when I turned on the television and KNEW that ESPN was on Channel 27, well, I was sure I had been invaded.

I couldn't have watched Saturday's game with more intensity. I watched the plays. I knew when the referees' calls made no sense. (Excessive celebration! Oh, come on, what is that?)

I jumped off the couch when something good happened; I barely took a breath for three hours. My arms flew in the air when a touchdown was scored .... and I stood up with defiance when it was taken away.

Who is this woman?

I have had many conversations about the game in the past couple of days ... actual conversations in which I understood things ... about football! (And actually cared!)

But, soon after the BCS announcements, I switched the channel to ABC. It was time for "Desperate Housewives."

I got out my "Got the Blues for Red" OPI nail polish and proceeded to paint my toenails. My husband walked in and started to talk about the BCS stuff and the Steeler game that was in progress. The words didn't compute so much.

I went back to my nails, and my "Housewives," and waved my football-speak husband away. The alien was gone. Phyllis was back.
