In the crosswalks

November 16, 2007 - Heather Ziegler
I received a complaint from a woman this week about people not using crosswalks, especially in downtown Wheeling. Well, not every street has a crosswalk from my observation. But I understand her frustration as I dodge delivery guys on Market Street every day after work. They run in and out of traffic to get to their cars. It's true of most people in town. If you don't cross at the corners, you are taking your life into your own hands. I only wish there was a crosswalk near South Street and the Intermodal Center. Lots of people park in the back lot of the civic center and there is no real "corner" at which to cross if you are coming from the newspaper, the beauty college, etc. It does not make sense to walk a block north to cross the street then have to walk a block and a half south to get to your car. The safest time to cross the street is change of shift at the Wheeling Police Department. When the officers are crossing the street to get to the civic center lot, the motorists pay attention!
