Moondog Bobble Head
November 14, 2007 - Heather Ziegler
Ever since the Wheeling Nailers announced it will give away Moondog bobblehead dolls later in the season, there has been a buzz about town. There are some pretty strong feelings about whether the Nailers are taking advantage of Moondog AKA Charlie Waldrum of Wheeling. If you know Moondog, you would understand that he is delighted with the idea and has had the support of family members who only have his best interest at heart. While Moondog was not paid a huge sum of money for the use of his face on the bobble head, he was paid and provided a new bicycle. There is a myth about Moondog that he is a homeless person who runs the streets. That is not the case. He has a home and income. Most people I have asked are chomping at the bit to get their hands on the Moondog keepsake. Moondog is as much a part of this Ohio Valley as the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. He is a character of sorts, but it wouldn't be the Fantasy in Lights Christmas Parade without Moondog making an appearance. Yes I suspect there will be some Moondog bobbleheads placed on E-bay and sold to the highest bidder. There is always someone out to make a buck on someone else's head. Recently we received a letter from a reader who is extremely upset with the idea because he feels it is demeaning to the city of Wheeling. The letter writer asked what was next, a bobblehead of Patrick Tribett, the local man who has been arrested many times for huffing paint. The arrest photo of Tribett covered with paint is not hard to find. It's everywhere on the Internet. While I think THAT would be taking advantage of someone who obviously does not have the capacity to make good decisions, Moondog has some people watching out for him. Check out the Moondog bobblehead on the Nailers Web site.
