It'll Make You Melt
October 7, 2013 - Phyllis Sigal
I love it when new places open around here.
I had such a great time wandering around Warwood's new Peebles on opening day a few weeks ago. And I'm already looking forward to seeing what Boscov's has to offer.
It took me a while, but I finally made it to Avenue Eats on Washington Avenue in Wheeling. Everyone was talking about how good it was, and after having had a couple of lunches there, I concur. I love the fish tacos and the black bean sliders. The burger sliders are great, too. They also offer several salads and a variety of toppings for their burgers. Their fries are delicious.
Just this past weekend I ventured into Grindhouse Coffee & Tea Co. at 2085 National Road in the Elm Grove section of Wheeling. (Where Isaly's used to be — you may only know that if you're as old as I am.) For everyone else, it's just a couple doors west of DiCarlo's.
A.J. Zambito has relocated his establishment from St. Clairsville to Wheeling, but he's added a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches and craft beers to the menu.
He also offers more than 100 latte recipes and more than 50 loose teas. If you like tea, you'll feel like a kid in a candy shop, looking at all of the jars lined up. It was tough for me to decide, there were so many!
And if you love grilled cheese — and who doesn't — you'll have an even more difficult time making your selection.
Here are just a few of the offerings: hot caprese (tomato slices, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil); smokin' hot chick (grilled chicken, bacon, granny smith apple, gouda, spinach); bully jack (shaved roast beef, pepperjack, onions, carrot, radish, red bell pepper); piggy melt (ground sausage patty, grilled onion, swiss cheese); and vegan melt (zucchini, squash, red pepper, carrots, radish, spinach, red onion, pesto, vegan cheese).
You also can get a simple "rookie run" — Texas toast with a mound of cheese of your choice. I like the sound of "a mound of cheese."
But if you're not into grilled cheese — all of which are served on Texas toast, with potato salad and a dill spear — there are other sandwiches on white or wheat tortilla wraps, or a buttery croissant
And if that's not enough, there are coney dogs, served with or without chili sauce.
Bagels and a cottage cheese bowl with mandarin orange slice are also on the menu.
I had a coney dog, just because I was in the mood for one, and it was great. I especially loved the potato salad. To me, it tasted the way potato salad should taste. I also tasted the caprese grilled cheese, which was delicious and gooey and wonderful.
It's just not a sandwich place either — there is live music some nights, too. Check out the Facebook page for updates.
I wish A.J. a lot of luck in his new place, and I can't wait to go back and try the smokin' hot chick, the Alpine turkey, the formaggio Italiano ... and have another order of that creamy, delicous potato salad!
Check it out ... Grindhouse Coffee & Tea Co. is open from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday.
