Baby, it's hot out there!
June 28, 2012 - Heather Ziegler
For the folks out there who like hot and humid, you got it. For the rest of us who prefer an air-conditioned room with the curtains closed, good luck. The next few days are going to be scorchers with temperatures in the 90s and humidity to match. Please be careful. Why do people insist on jogging in this heat? It's bad enough that many people have to work out in these conditions. Heat alerts are not to be ignored. This kind of weather is especially hard on the delicate health of older people and little kids. Please use sunblock if you have to be out there and drink lots of water -- not pop -- to stay hydrated. If you ever suffered from dehydration you would not want to repeat the experience. It HURTS. Trust me. I had it happen one summer after donating blood. It was very hot and I didn't take in enough fluids afterward. I still give blood. I just drink lots more fluids before and after. Blood donations are desperately needed right now so consider giving. On Wednesday, I talked with Wheeling Fire Chief Larry Helms and asked how he keeps the firefighters healthy in this heat. He said he pretty much preaches to the men to drink water all day long, not just after fighting a fire. Imagine fighting flames inside a building where the temperate is already in the 90s. Then imagine carrying an extra 70-75 pounds of equipment on your back while fighting a fire in this heat. Sometimes we forget about the men and women in those uniforms until we need them. My hat is off to anyone who has to work outside in this weather. Let's look out for one another. Especially our neighbors without air conditioning. Good time to visit the malls, libraries, churches and other places where it's cool inside. Be careful out there.
