OK, spring is here. The sun is shining and it's actually very warm out there. Too warm. There is still a lot of time left in the spring for frost and freezing mornings which scares the heck out of a lot of farmers and growers. If the fruit trees and nut trees bloom too soon, a freeze could kill them and there will be no crop. So, while you regale in these wonderful temperatures, don't put away the mittens just yet. I know it's spring because the Fulton Dairy Queen is open for the season. Soon the ball teams will line up at the windows and the lunch crowd will scoop up the hotdogs and shakes. Dairy Queens have a delicious thing called a "Freeze." It's a Misty (icy, slushy fruit concoction) mixed with vanilla soft serve ice cream. Beware, they could be addictive and do not, I repeat, do not suck this thing down quickly or you will experience brain freeze. While I sorely miss not having a Baskin Robbins in our area, we are lucky to have several places to get some good ice cream. Everyone knows about Kirke's Homemade Ice Cream in St. Clairsville where there have many flavors and are always experimenting with new recipes. Up at The Highlands, you can have your cake and ice cream, too, with some of the items on the menu at Cold Stone Creamery. Their smoothies are out of this world, too. Or you can hop over to the Russell Stover store where you can get a hand-dipped ice cream cone ... as if the chocolate in there isn't enough to curb a sugar craving. Some ice cream lovers swear by the ice cream sundaes or desserts at Perkins and who can pass up the ice cream fudge cake at T.J.'s restaurant? Then out at Hoss's Steak and Seafood in Elm Grove, there is the soft serve ice cream on the salad (?) bar and you can dress up the cold stuff with lots of toppings. Even Bob Evans has ice cream sundaes as does Cracker Barrel. At Applebee's they have these little desserts served in oversized shot glasses. They have cheesecake, hot fudge and a to die-for chocolate mousse creation, served in the little glasses. I'm sure you have your favorites and I encourage you to share yours with me. Fellow blogger Phyllis Sigal said she misses Howard Johnson coffee-flavored ice cream -- and Isaly's skyscraper cones.... How about you?
