What the heck?!
June 8, 2011 - Heather Ziegler
I've been down this road before but here goes. Council members in Wheeling have been once again sat silently by as several residents sought anwers to questions during a council meeting. It doesn't matter what the questions were or the topics, members of the voting public deserve answers from the people they elected. If the council members do not know the answers it would be polite to at least refer them to the correct person or persons to get the answers. In councils past, councilmen and women would often address issues in their wards on council floor. Most of the time the issues were precipitated by inquiries or complaints from the public. That's how the system should work. Sorry, councilors, but sitting there on your hands without at least acknowledging your constiutents is likely to bite you where you don't want to be bitten later on! I've heard tell that the council members have been told not to respond -- something to do about legal issues. Have we gotten that sue worry that we don't even make eye contact with the public?
