First Male Auxiliary Member Welcomed to VFW 437
MOUNDSVILLE — Moundsville VFW Auxiliary 437 is making history. It recently welcomed its first male member who is active and serving as a guard.
John Vitiello is no stranger to being a volunteer. He was active as a youngster in 4-H, Cub Pack 78 and Boy Scouts Troop 78. He serves at his church as a greeter and whatever they may need. Vitiello was very busy with the Sanford Center, for several years.
He served in the United States Navy and is very proud of that. He has been very busy helping the auxiliary with many events, even before he was a member. He helps with the Poppy Days, also setting up and tearing down the tables for the events; collecting for the holiday food baskets; visiting people in their homes when they cannot get out much; and a regular visitor to nursing homes and hospitals.
His proud parents are father and stepmother, Joseph and Janet Vitiello of Shadyside; and mother, Della Deskins of Moundsville, who serves as auxiliary treasurer.
Vitiello graduated from John Marshall High School, attending classes at Davis and Elkins College. He is employed at Wheeling University.
Vitiello encourages other men to consider becoming active members of the auxiliary. “The ladies really need some support. They are getting older and not as healthy as they used to be,” he said.
Contact Deskins at 304-810-5192 for an application or more information. Requirements to join: you must be older than 16, and related to a veteran that served our military in a foreign war.
The auxiliary is collecting canned goods for the holiday baskets at the VFW post on Grant Avenue. Donations are welcome. The auxiliary also needs personal care items for the veterans homes. Cash also is accepted to help the cause. Make check out to VFW Auxiliary 437 and mail to Della Deskins, 318 Olive Ave., Moundsville, WV 26041. This will be used for postage or fresh items for the baskets.
